An exciting experience for the whole family.
The largest salt mine in Austria will enchant the visitor
through the pure presence of salt. The only mine where the gangways lead through pure salt stone. Via two long miners’ slides, the visitors delve deep into the enchanted world down under.
During the Second World War, the tunnels of this mine were used to store invaluable works of art, including masterpieces by Michelangelo, Dürer, Rubens and Vermeer. A prize-winning multimedia exhibition documents the courage and commitment of the miners to save these art treasures in April 1945.
"Bombs on Michelangelo" or how the Altausse miners rescued Europe`s art treasures. Come and visit the original site of the dramatic recovery! Themed guided tours every Wednesday in July and August at 5:00pm.
During your subterranean tour, you will pass by mystical St. Barbara’s Chapel. The play of color here is impressive – the chapel shimmers in reds, yellows and oranges, and is made out of pure rock salt. Standing at an altar that was built by the miners back in 1935, to this day bridal couples continue to “tie the knot” – some 700 meters below ground. Two miners’ slides lead you into the depths of the mountain, to the shores of a salt lake. This spectacularly illuminated lake feels like a different world. As you have probably realized: In Altaussee Salt Mine, you are greeted by beauty in many different forms, wherever you look.
